It is heartbreaking to confirm that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 53.
The news was confirmed by his family and representatives on Friday morning. His death comes roughly ten months after he first went public with his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in April 2025.
His Battle and Legacy
Following his diagnosis, Dane became a fierce advocate for the ALS community. He spent his final year working with organizations like the ALS Network and I Am ALS to push for research funding and legislative changes, earning him the "Advocate of the Year" award in September 2025.
Final Performances: Despite the physical toll of the disease, Dane continued to work. He will appear in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, where he filmed his scenes in a wheelchair. He also took on a guest role in the show Brilliant Minds late last year, playing a firefighter dealing with an ALS diagnosis to help humanize the condition for audiences.
Forthcoming Memoir: His memoir, titled Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, is still scheduled to be published later this year. It covers his life from his early career to his journey with ALS.
Tributes: The entertainment world has been flooded with tributes from his Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria families. Ellen Pompeo, Kevin McKidd, and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson all shared messages honoring his talent, courage, and "McSteamy" legacy.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family’s statement noted that he was "surrounded by dear friends and family" in his final moments.
